Are you having a grey day?
Bring on the sun with vitamin D3!

Vitamin D, long known as the sunshine vitamin, is new news! No longer just a supportive vitamin for bone health, research shows that vitamin D is essential for brain and nerve health, cardiovascular and immune function, and in pregnancy and child development. Virtually every cell in the human body can use vitamin D. As well as being a vitamin, it is also a hormone that supports cellular production of proteins, and regulates genetic reactions, including those involved in cancer. New research, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that taking vitamin D supplements and calcium substantially reduces all-cancer risk in post-menopausal women. The researchers found that the higher the levels of vitamin D in the blood, the lower the relative risk of developing cancer.

The other important news about vitamin D is that many people are deficient in this nutrient partly due to use
of sunscreens and avoidance of the sun's rays. Also, those of us in northern climates like Canada, may not
get enough sun exposure during winter months to stimulate vitamin D production. A deficiency can leave
people susceptible to colds, flus, infections, and degenerative diseases.

To minimize health risks associated with UVB radiation exposure, while maximizing potential benefits of vitamin D, using a D3 supplement combined with small amounts of sun exposure is recommended.

Only the natural form of vitamin D, D3 also called cholecalciferol, enhances human health. This is the
form made by your skin on a sunny day. A person with fair skin with full body exposure to summer sun
can produce up to 20,000 IU of vitamin D3 in just 20 minutes. While Health Canada currently recommends
a maximum dose of only 1,000 IU daily, other experts suggest up to 5,000 IU daily for adults, who are not adequately exposed to sunlight. Published research indicates that there is no risk of toxicity from vitamin
D3 supplements in doses below 10,000 IU per day.

Natural Factors has always led the way in providing quality supplements to Canadians, providing vitamin
D3 in tablets or softgels, each with 1,000 IU per unit, as well as in liquid form with just one drop providing
1,000 IU of vitamin D3. Flaxseed oil in the liquid and softgel forms ensures optimum bioavailability of fat-
soluble vitamin D3.
